community meeting #1
wilkinsburg community and urban design studio
The Urban Laboratory
carnegie mellon university school of architecture
You are invited to a community meeting/workshop being held at 7:00pm on Wednesday, September 17th. The meeting, sponsored by the Carnegie Mellon University Urban Laboratory, will be held at the Three Rivers Center for Independent Living (TRCIL) located at 900 Rebecca Avenue. The meeting/workshop will initiate a year long participatory design process in Wilkinsburg that will result in the construction of a catalytic demonstration project during the summer of 2009.
The meeting on September 17th, the first of multiple community meetings/workshops to be held this fall, will focus on establishing understanding and setting goals for the community at large. Discussion will be devoted to the identification of primary issues and objectives that are of critical importance in strengthening a positive vision of the future for Wilkinsburg, from the perspective of community residents. The design process will be cross disciplinary, collaborative, will involve democratic decision making, and will seek to reinforce knowledge building within the community.
The work of the Urban Laboratory in Wilkinsburg this year will focus specifically on the Hamnett Place Neighborhood. In the spring of 2009 students and faculty who participated in the Wilkinsburg Studio during the fall will execute design development and construction document services for a tactical demonstration project within that neighborhood, at the Hamnett Homestead Sustainable Living Center (HHSLC). Collaboration with the community in the development of the urban design strategies and demonstration project will involve close partnership with the Institute for Ecological Innovation (IEI), a non-profit, 501c3 Corporation that seeks to model and disseminate sustainable planning strategies and accessible regenerative technologies.
